We take great pride in our Shāla, which is the outcome of a significant collaboration between our founder Mr. Mathew Joseph and Ar. Jose Benoy of BLUWUD. The concept and philosophy behind Shāla is to see ayurvastra simply for what it is; a commune with wellness and nature. While ethical and sustainable dyeing and weaving of our products are undertaken here, we see it not as a place of production, but one of experiential learning.
The architect draws parallels, resonating to the traditional settlements near the backwaters along this region, for the design of Shāla. It has an interesting integration of design solutions appropriate to the roots, climate and landscape of the region, the soil conditions and the functional needs for the production of our products, and echoing the ethos of our brand.
Keeping with our mantra of being an eco-friendly brand, Niraamaya overcome the dearth of fresh water for dyeing, by conceiving the very foundation of the Shāla as a water storage facility through the incorporation of rainwater harvesting. The very design of foundation, a response to the soil condition, helped us in avoiding huge piling – which was a big step towards preserving the ecosystem of the place. The usage of rainwater in our dyeing process has provided us the consistency in the production of colours and to a vibrant colour transfer to the dyed material.
The landscape architecture explores the potential of medicinal herbs and local ornamental species in the garden thus enhancing the experience of the Shāla in juxtaposition to the backwaters lapping at lush mangroves.
Wastewater management, the most important of all, is through a three-step filtration and sedimentation process, where residual solids are used as manure in our herbal garden along with the filtered water. Solar water heaters help us conserve the energy.
Our Shāla stands as a contemporary adaptation to the lush summary of ancient ayurvedic knowledge put to practice in the royal families of Travancore. It is a place of tranquility where one can achieve harmony with oneself. And we are so happy, when the visitors are able to resonate to what we have tried to achieve here.
